AUBURN - Elizabeth Bennett Clayton Wooten, 46, of 33 Holly St. in Auburn passed gently at her home on July 7, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

She was born in Elmira, N.Y., Oct. 4, 1957, to Elmer Gregg Clayton Jr. and Estelle Jean Smith Clayton, both of whom predeceased her. She attended schools in Horseheads, N.Y., and was a 1975 graduate of Horseheads High School. A life-long interest in education and learning led her to pursue a degree from Mansfield University in Pennsylvania, where she graduated with honors in 1984.

She moved to Maine with her son, Aaron Richardson and began her career as a teacher of history and social studies at Oak Hill High School in Sabattus, where she quickly earned the respect of both students and her fellow educators for her dedication, high standards and ability to inspire others with her own abiding curiosity about other cultures and societies.

In 1989, she married Lawrence "Larry" Wooten and together had three children, Paul Isaiah Wooten, Mary Lynnor Wooten and Keira Jean Wooten. She dedicated her life to providing the best possible environment for her family. She also was active in community affairs and maintained ongoing friendships with many of her former students.

She will be remembered by friends and family as a loving, energetic person who gave generously of herself in everything she pursued.

She is survived by her husband, Larry; children, Paul, Mary and Keira, all of Auburn; son, Aaron Richardson of Portland, Ore.; and a stepdaughter, Amy Roy of Providence, R.I.; in addition to her immediate family she leaves brothers, Mark Clayton of Auburn, David Clayton of Connecticut, and Paul Clayton of California.
